Fitness Resources: Nerd Fitness!

Today I’m going to be talking to you about one of my favourite fitness websites, Nerd Fitness! (Because let’s face it – there’s a bit of nerd in all of us.) There are several things that Nerd Fitness does better than other fitness groups and makes it my go-to when I need a motivation boost or a good workout!

1. It makes exercise genuinely fun

If you’re struggling to keep to a fitness routine simply because you hate workouts, don’t worry, you aren’t alone. Making a habit is tough especially when it’s something you despise doing. Nerd Fitness works around the incredibly motivating idea that life is a video game. Sounds crazy? It sort of is but it’s also highly effective!

In role-playing video games you work to become better, stronger, faster so that you can level up. You work on particular skills like speed and agility to improve them in order to complete tasks. Why can’t real life be the same?

Steve Kamb challenges us to believe that it can be.

“The overarching theme of Nerd Fitness is to “level up your life, every single day.” Focus on getting stronger, getting faster, having fun, and eating right.”

The first step is choosing your class. Are you a warrior, scout, ranger, assassin, monk, druid or adventurer? (I’m an assassin in case you were wondering!) Each of them involves different activity types and the focus is on choosing a class that you will love working to improve. For example assassins require strength, agility, flexibility and stamina so one should practice yoga, weight lifting, gymnastics etc.

2. Freebies!

If you’re like me and you can’t afford to pay for fitness subscriptions there are still plenty of great resources for free on Nerd Fitness. And who doesn’t love getting free stuff?

From their blog, offering useful advice and constant motivation to the community forums, full of inspiring threads and challenges, they’ve got you covered.

Their website provides several free and creative workout routines such as the Batman Bodyweight Workout and the Angry Bird Workout. They’re constantly updating with new and inspiring ideas that make the bore of exercise so much more exciting!

3. Nerd Fitness Academy and Real Life Camp!

Steve Kamb established the Nerd Fitness Academy to help people achieve a level of fitness and body weight that they are happy with. The Academy is an online interactive course in the style of a roleplaying video game where players complete workouts in order to advance to greater levels. Joining the Academy requires an initial payment:

“A one-time payment of $99 gets you full, immediate access to the entire Academy, all bonuses, the quest tracking, and all future updates (for life).”

You have to admit that’s a pretty good deal especially when paired with their money back guarantee.

“Think of us as an anti-school of sorts, like the X-Men Academy, AKA ‘Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.’”

If anyone is thinking of getting me Christmas present, well, *cough cough* *hint hint*

As well as the Academy, last year Steve and his team launched Camp Nerd Fitness which kind of looks like the greatest thing ever. About 300 nerds come together for a four day camp where they live together in cabins, exercise daily at their own speed and requirements, and eat healthy food. The camps prices start at $825 which is a hefty fee but with everything included in it, it’s not a bad deal. Check out the Nerd Fitness website for full details but I have to say it looks like a lot of fun.

Just letting you know my birthday is shortly after Christmas so y’know, take note.

4. Female Friendly Space

This one is majorly important to me. As I’ve mentioned previously, I’ve struggled in the past to find fitness resources for women that don’t make me feel self conscious or downright uncomfortable in my body. Nerd Fitness does none of these things which is awesome! It makes little to no distinction between male and female members, treating everyone equally. They approach fitness from a health perspective rather than a weightloss viewpoint. (It is obviously also marketed towards people trying to lose weight but it’s made clear that you don’t have to want this to join their movement.)

Nerd Fitness also addresses issues such as mental health, specific dietary requirements, feminist fitness and nutrition! (I know, it’s so refreshing, right?!)

“Tamara Lackey talks about mental heath and how to exercise when you don’t have the energy. She’s also vegan and shares how to get enough protein despite not eating animal products.”

“Nia Shanks explains why the scale can be so frustrating and how to get maximum results with minimum effort. Her rant on the mainstream women’s fitness industry is priceless!”
