I don’t know about you but I can’t stand porridge. The mushy texture, the bland flavour – ughh I just hate it. I’m therefore so torn because I want all the benefits oats bring without the grossness. Oats are a simple, quick, filling and healthy meal any time of the day but particularly in the morning when I’m rushing around. Luckily for you I’ve collected a few ingenious ways to eat oats without horrible old porridge!
1. Energy Packed Smoothie
There are plenty of great recipes out there for smoothies that include some nutritious oatmeal. At the moment I’m loving Thug Kitchen’s Strawberry Oatmeal smoothie. If you love your peanut butter for breakfast try this Banana and Peanut Butter smoothie. Incorporating oatmeal into smoothies is so simple and adds fibre while also making it an even more filling meal.

2. Oatmeal Pancakes
These delicious little treasures are one of my go-to stress breakfasts. During my exams last month I basically lived off them. After cooking two batches, wrapping them in cling-film and freezing them I was then able to defrost them as needed. Heat them up in the microwave for about 30 seconds on a piece of kitchen paper (in order to soak up any moisture). Here’s some I made a while back although this particular recipe wasn’t vegan as I used eggs. It’s probably my favourite oat pancake recipe so you can click the photo for the recipe!
3. Blueberry Oatmeal Donuts
If you don’t have a donut tray simply make these in a muffin tin, they work just as well! Packed full of antioxidants these baked donuts make the perfect morning snack.
4. Oatmeal Cookie Dough
Some mornings you wake up and you just have to stave off that sugar craving. For those days we have the delicious yet nutritious oatmeal cookie dough. This shouldn’t be a morning staple of course but every now and then I like to treat myself to a dessert first thing in the morning!
Or if you have zero time to sit down and eat try making these bite sized cookie dough balls.
5. Oatmeal Bars
Simple and again perfect to run out the door with. These fiber filled bars will stave you over until lunch time without forcing you to go on a sugar binge.
Delicious and crunchy granola is one of my favourite breakfast cereals. Buy some from your local supermarket or make your own with recipes like this and this. Not only does it taste great with milk but it’s a perfect dry snack aswell! Toss some in a sandwich bag, seal and snack on it as required!
7. Oat Muffins
This great recipe from Momable is so awesome I don’t even have the words. It’s one of the best muffin’s I’ve tasted – and it’s made with oats! Substitute coconut oil or vegan butter for the traditional butter and you’re good to go.
If you weren’t previously inspired to buy a packet of oatmeal hopefully you are now! Remember just because porridge is icky that doesn’t mean oats are! Go forth my readers and eat oats!
Do you actually love porridge and this post was really strange for you to read? Are you like me and can’t stand even the smell of the stuff? Let me know in the comments or talk to me on Twitter, Instagram or Google+
